How to handle “I already have coverage” on final expense calls

2026-10-26

Short answer: Do not bash their carrier or burial plan. Acknowledge it, ask what they have (type, face amount, who owns it — only as your company allows), and look for gaps with curiosity. If a next step makes sense, use an assumptive advance such as starting an application to see if they can get approved — without inventing a payment date. WhisprIQ can suggest discovery or next-step language on your screen; it never speaks to the customer and does not make the call compliant.

Training only — not an approved script. Suitability and disclosures stay yours. Hubs: Final expense objection handling, Final expense AI sales assistant, AI agent assist for insurance.

Why this objection needs curiosity, not debate

Existing-coverage / “I have a burial plan” language is common in FE training SERPs. Agents lose when they:

  • Argue that the other company is bad
  • Ignore what the prospect already paid for
  • Jump to a close without knowing face amount, ownership, or beneficiaries

Sometimes they are fully covered for their goal. Sometimes the plan is small, workplace-only, or not portable. You cannot know until you ask — politely.

Framework: acknowledge → discover → gap (if any) → advance

1) Acknowledge

Illustrative:

“That’s great that you already have something in place — a lot of people don’t.”

2) Discover (illustrative themes — not a mandatory script)

Ask only what your company process allows. Example themes:

  • What kind of coverage (group vs individual; FE vs term vs whole)?
  • Rough face amount / monthly, if they know?
  • Who is the beneficiary?
  • Does it stay with them if they leave a job (if group)?
  • What problem were they hoping it would solve?

Illustrative:

“Just so I don’t talk past what you already have — is that through work, or a policy you own yourself?”

3) Gap gently (never invent)

If discovery shows a possible gap and your approved talk track allows it, restate their goal and ask whether they want to look at filling it. Do not guarantee the other policy is inadequate. Do not promise savings.

Illustrative:

“Based on what you shared, it sounds like you wanted final costs off your kids’ plate — does the coverage you have today fully cover that amount, or is there still a gap you’d want to look at?”

If there is no gap: congratulate them and exit cleanly. Selling past a true “fully covered” answer damages trust.

4) Advance without payment-date language

When a review / application next step is appropriate (company rules + prospect consent):

“Let’s start the application and see if we can get you approved. Once you’re approved, you can look it over and make any changes if necessary.”

No invented payment dates. No promised underwriting outcomes. Assumptive next step only when they are still engaged.

Example (illustrative)

Prospect: “I already have coverage through work.”

Agent: “That’s great you have something. Is that a group plan through your job, or a policy you own?”

Prospect: “Group through work.”

Agent: “Got it — and if you left that job, do you know whether that coverage stays with you?”

Continue only inside approved discovery. If they engage on a portability / gap theme, offer the next step your shop allows. If they are firm that work coverage is enough: thank them and leave a soft callback only if appropriate.
