Do you need to record calls to use an AI sales assistant?

2026-10-27

Short answer: You do not need a separate “save this call as a WAV/MP3” recording workflow just to get live on-screen suggestions. But real-time AI assist still processes call content (speech → text → coaching). That is not “nothing happened.” Consent, disclosure, and company policy can still apply — even when you never press a red Record button in a dialer. WhisprIQ does not make calls compliant. You and your company own what the law and your policy require.

Two different things buyers mix up

Idea What people usually mean How it relates to WhisprIQ
Saved recording A file or archive of the call audio you can replay later (QA, dispute, training library) WhisprIQ’s Privacy Policy states call audio is not stored
Live assist / transcription for coaching Software listens during the call so it can suggest next lines or summarize WhisprIQ captures mic + system audio on your Windows PC, turns speech into text, and uses that text for on-screen suggestions and a post-call summary

Agents often ask: “If I’m not recording, is AI assist okay?” The clearer split is:

  1. Do I need my dialer’s record feature on? — Not as a WhisprIQ product requirement for suggestions.
  2. Is call content still being analyzed in real time? — Yes, when you run WhisprIQ on a call.
  3. Does that create consent / disclosure duties? — Often treated seriously by counsel and employers; ask them, do not guess from a blog.

What WhisprIQ does with audio (product facts)

Aligned with the live Privacy Policy (effective October 20, 2026 — re-read if the page has changed):

Does

  • Capture microphone + computer call audio during a call you start in the app (best with a Windows softphone / computer dialer).
  • Convert speech to text and send that text to WhisprIQ servers and our AI provider to produce live suggestions and an end-of-call summary.
  • Keep call summaries and related outcome data for a limited period described in the policy (summaries kept for up to 12 months, then archived/deleted per that policy language).

Does not (product behavior)

  • Speak to the person you are calling.
  • Join as a bot or third voice.
  • Auto-send email, SMS, or CRM updates.
  • Store call audio (per Privacy Policy: call audio is not stored).
  • Keep a full live transcript after the call is processed (per Privacy Policy).

We will not say: “Nothing leaves your machine,” “AI assist is never recording,” or “if audio isn’t saved, consent never applies.” Text is processed off-device to create suggestions. Treat that seriously.

Consent still may apply to real-time analysis

Even when your goal is coaching — not building a call library — many compliance conversations treat real-time transcription or AI monitoring with the same caution as recording, especially in stricter states. Whether that is identical under every statute is a lawyer question.

Practical product notes (not legal advice):

  • Our Privacy Policy says you must tell participants the call may be recorded and transcribed and obtain any consent the law requires. California is named in the policy as an example of a stricter consent state.
  • WhisprIQ includes a recording and transcription disclosure in the opening script that you must read when using the product as designed. Reading it is a helper — not a guarantee the call is lawful everywhere.
  • Employer, carrier, agency, and FMO rules can be stricter than the minimum the law allows.

Deep dive: Is it legal to use AI on sales calls?

Live suggestions vs conversation-intelligence “recording platforms”

Some tools are built around saving and searching full calls for managers. WhisprIQ is built around agent-side, in-the-moment suggestions on Windows phone sales — plus a summary after the call. That category difference matters when you compare vendors:

  • Ask: “Do you store call audio? Full transcripts? For how long?”
  • Ask: “Does anything from the product become audible to the prospect?” (For WhisprIQ: no — see Can the customer hear the AI?.)
  • Ask your company: “Are we allowed to use real-time AI assist on this product line?”

A longer comparison post on AI sales assistant vs call-recording platforms is queued separately — until that page ships, use the hubs above.

Softphone note (setup, not compliance)

Suggestions work best when call audio lives on your Windows PC (softphone or computer dialer). Cellphone-on-speaker next to the laptop is a poor fit. Mac = waitlist on /download. Setup guide: Softphone vs cellphone.

Soft next step

If your company has cleared AI assist for your role:

No close-rate, income, or revenue promises — only optional on-screen coaching you control (pause anytime; use, adapt, or ignore).
